I know, I know, but, in case you’ve started your Christmas shopping…

I can already hear the outrage. It’s only the start of November! And yet, some people LIKE to sort Christmas and other holiday shopping early. Some people (including me) are already REALLY looking forward to making 2018 the best yet.

If you’re interested, I’ve put together a few potential gift ideas – maybe treats for yourself, maybe a gift for a loved one.

Billericay Library book signing on Saturday, 25th November

My main client space remains Witham, with the Feel Better Every Day Consultancy on the high street but, in recent months, I’ve been offering a few sessions a week from Colchester (and am starting teaching a Sleep Yoga class there in January).

As of this week, am delighted to be offering a few sessions a week from Frinton on Sea on Essex’s Sunshine Coast. The Connaught Clinic is just a few moments from the seafront and a short walk from the station.

Fridge Magnet Therapy with Chris Milbank

I’ve long loved energy therapies. Woo woo as many sound, I’m trained and experienced in a fair few. Crystal therapy was the first (crystals helped me where hospital prescribed painkillers didn’t so, having been interested since my teens, I became open to learning more and ended up training over three years. I still use them daily).

NLP has its energetic elements and Art Giser’s gorgeous Energetic NLP (ENLP) has been so powerful (and speedy), with great results in so many areas of my life, as well as being a tool I sometimes share with clients and students, I incorporate some into my daily meditation each morning.

And EFT works with meridians (something I first learned about during my crystal therapy training although I feel more comfortable with the chakras).

Even the kind of counselling I do, psychosynthesis, has its energetic elements. It’s creator, Roberto Assagioli, had worked with Freud but was also very interested in potential as much as wounding. Eastern philosophy as well as Western science. I’ve done some training with Energetic Psychotherapy pioneer, Phil Mollon.

And, of course, yoga works with energy. So it’s a big part of what I do, both for my own self-care and when working with clients and students.

Still, when I was invited to an evening of Fridge Magnet Therapy, I definitely laughed at the idea. One friend rolled her eyes and said, ‘Only you, Eve’ (although the evening was FILLED with similarly curious souls so I wasn’t the only one by a long shot!).

I’d not heard of Chris Milbank but the other Solar Events trainings I’d attended (Art Giser‘s ENLP and Joanna Martin‘s Presentation Secrets) had far exceeded my expectations so I was open to it.

And it rocked. Jemma had included some black cat fridge magnets in the selection she’d bought so I chose one in honour of Rainbow (see above. Of COURSE I chose a black cat over unicorns, mermaids, witches and other magical creatures).

Chris seemed smiley and down to earth. He was also laughing at his creation of Fridge Magnet Therapy but as he spoke about more traditional magnet therapy and the meridians, it made sense. (Again, I know that much of what makes sense to me sounds nuts to my loved ones, let alone strangers.)

He pointed out that apart from us knowing that meridians exist because we feel energy work WORKING, Pierre de Vernejoul demonstrated these electrical pathways’ existence by injecting dye and showing visibly how it moved around this energy system.

I volunteered to be first guinea pig as while not phobic, I had a fair bit of dread about my upcoming dental surgery. As with EFT and NLP, he tested as he went along, I’d be feeling much better about it and he’d throw in something about my not just needing the one implant to replace my poor broken tooth but that I’d need 6. A week. On my toes.

Of course, this made me laugh as well as cringe and I continued following his instructions using the magnet along a meridien (this can be done via Skype as the person uses the magnet on him or herself). At one point (I was also a little self conscious being in front of a fairly large group), I joked about throwing myself out of the window.

I had no idea where that had come from but after the demonstration, when I sat back in my seat and made notes,

The upcoming dental treatment felt much less daunting and as I wrote, I remembered being a young teenager, having four teeth removed in order to have a fixed brace fitted (someone used to call me Sharky as my teeth were growing over each other). Before going under, I remembered having a real sense of dread. The dentist (not my usual lovely soul) was clearly in a bad mood and I had a strong sense of him meaning me harm. I remember actively wanting to leap out of the window to get away from him.

I know from the yoga therapy and other trauma work just how adept the body is at storing memories but the gums? Teeth? This astonished me as I made the connection last night. When I think back, I’m not sure if that was the last thing I remembered before waking up with four fewer teeth or if I had the teeth removed by someone less sadistic another time but I remember that feeling.

So I was lucky enough to experienced Fridge Magnet Therapy’s benefits direct from its inventor.

Throughout the rest of the evening, as well as some other demonstrations, we worked on some of our own beliefs and issues. And as with other intense energy work experiences, I slept really well afterwards.

Its something I’m delighted to have come across and I know I’ll offer it as an option, when it feels appropriate, as part of sessions, workshops and classes.

As with EFT and crystals and yogic breaths and so on, while I believe they have energetic benefits, you really don’t have to for it to work.

Even the act of thinking to yourself, ‘Hmmm, _____ is holding me back/bugging me/causing upset/whatever… I know, I’ll play with that Fridge Magnet Therapy’ (or EFT or whatever feels good to you) offers a way of remembering you’re more than your ruminating mind.

That issue you want support with (or to help yourself with) is intense enough to be bothering you. By actively moving your hand and the magnet along the meridian (or tapping or whatever you choose), you’re changing your posture, you’re probably calming your breath, you’re almost certainly laughing. You’re helping your body’s natural healing capabilities to kick in. And there are no side effects (apart from, maybe, a little embarrassment).

Health and beauty fayre in Witham on Saturday – pop over to say ‘Hi!’

If you’re in Witham on Saturday 18th (between 10am and 4pm), do say ‘Hi!’

There’s a health and beauty fayre in the Newlands Centre so you’ll meet all sorts of  practitioners you may not have known worked locally.

I’ll be at the Feel Better Every Day gazebo, doing demos and chatting to people around some of the ways we can all use our minds, bodies, hearts and souls to Feel Better Every Day.

I’ll be answering any questions you might have about:

My and others’ tips for a good night’s sleep in the Daily Mail (1/6/15) sleep report by India Sturgis

When encouraging people to choose crystals (for better sleep or anything else), I always emphasise the importance of trusting your own intuition. Sure, certain stones have traditional associations (some of which are shared in the print version) but it’s most effective to have a clear intention and choose one specifically to help you, in that moment.

If curious, sit (or stand or lie down!) comfortably and ponder your intention, asking to be guided to the best stone to support sleep (or whatever).

The clearer you can be with this, the more strongly you’ll feel guided – play with it.

My highlights from BACP’s Practitioner Conference

I’ve had a fab few days in lovely Leeds for the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy’s Practitioner Conference.

As part of BACP’s Coaching Executive (I’m their Specialist for Communications), it was brilliant to spend so much time with my colleagues and to learn more about the way they work.

I had some lovely feedback about my own presentations on becoming more embodied as practitioners (sharing self care tools with therapists and coaches and was glad I’d risked sharing some crystal therapy and EFT (emotional freedom technique) as well as the more obvious body and breath work.)

An unexpected but much appreciated bonus on the Friday was a glorious (if stupid o’clock in the morning) swim. I had felt overly optimistic packing swim things and delusional when asking at Reception about the pool (it hadn’t been on the website) but it turned out they had a shuttle which took me to a local golf club.

One of my highlights was seeing the 45 delegates in my Friday workshop being so willing to participate and happily experimenting with Power Poses (if you haven’t already, do check out Amy Cuddy’s Ted Talk here for more on this simple and effective technique).

Professor Stephen Joseph’s keynote on Post Traumatic Growth resonated with my own experience (personal and professional) as well as fitting so well with psychosynthesis which sees people’s potential as much as their wounding.

How wonderful to hear that 30-70% of survivors later (often MUCH later – this has to happen in their own time and on their own terms) see the trauma/s as a springboard into a more meaningful life.

I bought the last copy of his What Doesn’t Kill Us book and turned around and he was there so got an autographed copy.

Anne Scoging differentiated between complex and complicated trauma and gave an amazing talk about her experiences with the latter through her work with London firefighters.

I was sorry to not be able to attend more but with so many interesting offerings, I stuck with the trauma and self-care strands for Day 1.

BACP’s Jade and Richard and others (not to mention all the volunteers on BACP’s various Executives) did an amazing job organising it all.

That evening, we met some of BACP Coaching’s Network Group Organisers who were more local to Leeds than London. So great to put faces to names. If you’re a coach-therapist or simply want to find out more, it’s worth checking out local meetings and you can find out more information here.

Day 2 was about integrative coach-therapy and, having been in the background while Steve Page and Gill Fennings-Monkman put such a fab day together, it was great to be part of it unfolding and to meet so many lovely new coach-therapists and therapists who were simply interested in learning more about coaching.

We started with a Panel discussion and it was inspirational for me to hear more about their diverse journeys into coach-therapy.

My more holistic route into coach-therapy was very different from the others’ (more corporate) and, again, I’d been a little apprehensive about sharing some of it but people responded really positively.

Margaret Chapman guided some of us in a mindfulness meditation at lunch and Carolyn Mumby was, as ever, a superstar stepping in at the last minute after the lovely Jayne Hildreth (get well soon!) was too ill to make it for her segment.

Carolyn, Gill, Michele Down and Becky Wright pulled together to create an integrative workshop on integrative coach-therapy and some of the different approaches (including a comedic and informative role play session with Gill playing a fictional client and Michele pausing to explain her process at different stages throughout the session).

Steve Page led a thought provoking workshop around the quality of supervision for coach-therapists and then I shared some more self-care tools before we completed the day with a roundup discussion.

All in all, I feel fortunate to have met so many lovely people and to have got to know the team better.

As well as being part of such an exciting, pioneering and innovative way of working, it’s easy to occasionally feel a little isolated.

I imagine that the feeling of gratitude for community and support I felt in Leeds will stay with me for a long time.
